Espoo’s Kera as a Residential Area

An urban neighborhood built for sustainable living.

The city is growing sustainably in Kera – we are planning new owner-occupied homes for the area

Kera

Kera as a Residential Area

Did you know all this about Kera?

Espoo’s Kera is a transforming residential area located in a central part of Espoo. Kera was once known for logistics and industrial activities, but today the area is undergoing a major change into a modern, sustainable, and community-oriented urban environment.
The development of Kera is part of Espoo’s broader strategy to create attractive, vibrant, and diverse neighborhoods. The area’s history combined with its excellent location makes Kera a unique place to live. As the population grows, local services are expanding quickly. Plans include new shops, a daycare center, a school, and various leisure facilities.

Already, the southern part of the area in Nihtisilta and the northern edge near Nokia’s campus have grocery stores, and Kera is also home to Finland’s largest recycling center. The future station area will provide a great setting for a compact service hub, and the goal is to create a pleasant, easily accessible environment for pedestrians and cyclists in the town center.

New owner-occupied homes coming soon

We are planning new homes in Kera, and it’s important for us to consider residents’ wishes. By sharing your preferences in advance, you can influence the design solutions of future projects and also join the pre-list for upcoming developments.

Recreational Areas and Sports Facilities

Kera area offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities and exercise. Nearby you’ll find green parks, jogging trails, and sports fields. Espoo Central Park and the Gällträsk area in Kauniainen are popular spots for outdoor recreation.

Leppävaara’s versatile sports park and swimming hall are about a 15-minute bike ride away. Golf enthusiasts will enjoy Leppävaara Range and Tapiola Golf, both just a short distance away. Kilo riding stables and a frisbee golf course provide even more hobby options.

Kera’s peaceful surroundings and pedestrian routes make the area pleasant for leisure and outdoor activities.

Great cycling routes

Kera’s location next to the railway and a well-connected street network makes it perfect for cycling — both for daily commutes and longer leisure rides. A major improvement coming soon is the new Rantarata Baana: a high-quality cycling corridor planned along the railway as part of the Espoo urban rail project. Baana will offer a straight, wide, and barrier-free cycling route that connects station areas and shortens detours.

From Kera, you can also quickly reach Espoo Central Park and Viherkallio, which offer versatile trails for mountain biking and gravel riding.

TRANSPORT CONNECTIONS

By train to Sello in five minutes and to Helsinki in fifteen

Kera’s location offers excellent transport connections in all directions, making the area attractive for both residents and businesses. Kera train station is right in the heart of the area, and travel is quick — you can reach the Sello shopping center in 5 minutes and Helsinki city center in 15 minutes. The services in Kauniainen are just a 2-minute train ride away.

In addition, several bus lines run through the area, connecting Kera efficiently to nearby neighborhoods and other parts of Espoo. Driving is easy thanks to the nearby Turku Highway and Ring Road II, which provide fast access to different parts of the Helsinki metropolitan area and national main roads. Cycling is also convenient in Kera: the area will have extensive bike paths and smooth connections to Espoo’s and Helsinki’s cycling networks.

The variety and accessibility of transport options make Kera a modern and well-connected residential and business area.

In a virtual presentation created by the City of Espoo and Ramboll, you can explore the future green streets and attractive park areas of the neighborhood.

Smart and unique residential area

Kera aims to become an internationally recognized model area for circular economy. The future Kera will be built as a smart and unique district that combines sustainable development principles, the opportunities of digitalization, and carbon-neutral circular economy solutions.

The area is planned to include systems based on zero-emission energy sources, low-carbon and eco-friendly construction methods, green blocks, and diverse public art – all creating a pleasant and community-oriented environment. Emphasizing sustainability and resource efficiency will make practices like following a zero-carbon budget natural for residents.

Energy production will use solutions such as geothermal heating and solar panels, and at every stage of construction, we aim for choices that benefit both the environment and people in the long term.

Kera’s stakeholders work closely together in an open, long-term, and broad collaboration to achieve development goals. Open information sharing helps adopt and spread best practices and new ways of working quickly.
Every project takes into account Kera’s long-term development objectives and promotes a wider regional perspective. Partners seek committed participants for all stages of the land use process to ensure alignment with these goals.

The goal of Kera’s development is to create a local, carbon-neutral heating solution. Properties will have access to heat produced by a local heat pump plant and distributed through a district network. By connecting to this system, buildings help achieve the area’s energy-positive target. The solution also supports future building- and block-level systems, enabling two-way energy solutions for properties. Whenever possible, waste heat generated in the area will be utilized in production.
Energy solutions for buildings will follow the energy-saving and energy-producing technologies listed the Land Use Agreement. For profitable electricity production, joint solutions will be explored, such as energy communities.

During Kera’s transformation and development phase, the area will serve as a platform for innovative food production solutions and circular economy services, such as temporary use of buildings and a recycling center. The goal is to ensure that solutions promoting sustainable use of natural resources and serving residents become a permanent part of the future living environment.

In Kera, people live and work in well-designed spaces where quality and comfort come first. A diverse range of housing options makes it possible for residents in different life stages to find a home. Along with zero-emission construction and digital solutions, the design focuses on well-being, safety, health, and supporting community and urban culture in both outdoor and indoor spaces. Residents and workers in the area will have opportunities to participate and influence its development. Smooth everyday living is a priority even during the construction phase, and solutions and services that make life easier will be introduced early in the building process.

Construction projects will pilot and apply high-quality, durable design solutions that follow the principles of carbon-neutral circular economy. Whenever possible, the use of recycled materials and products, as well as low-carbon or carbon-binding materials, should be the starting point for all material and product choices. Each project will include calculations of the building’s life-cycle climate impact, and efforts will be made to minimize it. To reduce process and material waste, planning for logistics, site services, storage, and other actions will aim for joint coordination and shared, centralized services between different projects. Disruption to residents caused by construction sites will be minimized. As part of the area’s carbon-neutrality goal, all construction projects will aim for fossil-free sites in line with the objectives of the Green Deal agreement for Emission-Free Construction Sites signed by the City of Espoo.

In demolition and earthworks, we aim to maximize material efficiency, follow the waste hierarchy, improve sorting by waste type, and achieve a high recycling rate. Demolition projects follow the practices of the Sustainable Demolition Green Deal agreement. A demolition survey is carried out for all buildings to be demolished. Demolition materials are processed and reused as close to the site as possible and for the most valuable purpose. In earthworks, we use as much recycled soil material as possible, in compliance with the MARA regulation and the upcoming MASA regulation. For cleaning contaminated soil, an assessment of contamination and the need for remediation must be prepared. If remediation is needed, the assessment will include a sustainability review of the cleaning options. Excavated soil containing harmful substances should be treated and cleaned whenever possible so that it can be reused.

Walking, cycling, and public transport will be made the most attractive ways to move around in Kera. Shared vehicles will primarily be electric or run on recycled fuel. All logistics will be organized efficiently so that transport capacity is optimized and causes as little disturbance as possible to the environment and other traffic.

Digital solutions in Kera will be used for planning and optimizing material and energy-efficient construction, waste management, and energy consumption. The goal is to create fast network connections and enable local actors to use data for developing new smart services and solutions. All locally collected data should be as openly available and usable as possible. Data-sharing practices will be developed together in a responsible way, respecting privacy.
